2 Weeks To Go: "What I Wish I Had Known"  August 18, 2008

Advice from students who've been where you are:

  • Don't skip class.  Even if they say they don’t take off points for attendance, the instructor will notice, and you’ll learn more if you actually attend class.
  • Be on-time.  You don't want to disrupt the instructor, and you may miss something important.
  • Read your books.  Even if they don't talk about it in class; it's on the test.
  • Start your language class in your first year.  You don’t want to try and play catch up in your senior year with the language.
  • Make sure you take your Freshman Writing course in your first year.
  • Take at least one course that is not a large lecture.
  • Always talk to the instructor if you are having a problem in your class; they are very approachable.
  • Talk to your instructor even if you are not having a problem—building a network on campus includes the faculty and graduate assistants.
  • Use the Gopher Guide for course planning, and as an aid in keeping track of your coursework, exams, etc.
  • Do not take a 3-5xxx level course in your first year.
  • Make sure you register for at least one “fun” course each semester.
  • Get involved in activities and organizations so that you can have a richer experience while you are an undergraduate.
  • Take advantage of information sessions and programs to find out about majors.
  • Look at the syllabus often so you are on top of things and understand options and projects.
  • Try and keep track of your grades on-line or with your instructor.

Other Tips from Your Advisers:

  • Check your University email account – both the University and your adviser communicate with you frequently over email.
  • Meet with your CLA adviser and your major departmental adviser to make sure you are on track to graduate.
  • Register in a timely manner once your registration queue starts.
  • Take care of any registration holds at least a month before you are scheduled to register.
  • Use the Career and Community Learning Center early on in your career at the University.
  • Check www.onestop.umn.edu and your Gopher Guide for the add/drop deadlines each semester.

Next week, learn about unique study abroad opportunities!
