8 Weeks To Go: Get
involved in the University Community July 7, 2008
Don't be shy (there's so much to try!)
We've told you about preparing for college-level study and
learning about majors. However, college includes more than studying and the
classroom. It's important to balance your academics with other opportunities
during your four years; it's these extra opportunities that will round out your
undergraduate experience. Involvement in the University also keeps you
motivated overall. We encourage you to find ways to get involved in the
University beyond the classroom.
First, stay informed. Visit these Campus Life web pages
regularly to learn about events and opportunities on campus: Campus Events (http://events.tc.umn.edu/), U of M Arts
and Culture (http://www1.umn.edu/twincities/04_arts.php),
and the U of M homepage (http://www.umn.edu).
Also, you can get involved with other students who share
your interests. Check out the long, long list of the University's student
groups at http://www.sua.umn.edu/. There
you can find and become involved with student organizations related to your
major or career interests. Another place to look is in major department web
pages, which often list contact information for current officers in majors’
student groups.
Be sure to explore internships, research, and volunteer
opportunities that will introduce you to your career interests. Below are just
a few links to inform you about what is available on campus. Quite often,
financial assistance is available for you to take advantage of these learning experiences!
-Undergraduate Research Opportunity
Program - do research with a faculty member and earn credit (http://www.urop.umn.edu/)
-Service Learning - class plus community service, rolled
into one (http://www.servicelearning.umn.edu/)
-CLA Undergraduate Internship Grant - get paid for your
"unpaid" internship (http://careerservices.class.umn.edu/students/workopportunities/CLA_Undergraduate_Internship_Grant1.html)
- GoldPASS – database of internship and volunteer, as well
as other, listings (http://careerservices.class.umn.edu/students/workopportunities/CLA_Link.html)
Get an on-campus job. Save on travel time to and from
work. To look for jobs, check out
GoldPASS (link above) or the Student Positions website (http://www1.umn.edu/ohr/employment/openings/student.html)
And last but not least, consider STUDYING ABROAD!!!! The
world is your campus, after all! Check out the Learning Abroad
Center website for
details and info sessions (http://www.umabroad.umn.edu/)
Take advantage of the above opportunities and make the most
of your undergraduate experience!
