Society and Culture Student Community
Welcome to Society and Culture or, as we here in the office like to call it, "Your home-away-from-home". We are located in room 122 Johnston Hall, right at the Northwest corner of Northrop Mall. You can reach us in person, by phone at 612-624-2549 or by email at sandc@umn.edu. Our office is open from 8 am - 4:30 pm, Monday - Friday, and closed on university holidays.

We are your college advising office. We can advise you on all CLA policies, requirements and more. In the end, we are also the office that clears you for graduation. Because it is a big place, the College of Liberal Arts (CLA) divides its students into "student communities" based on what type of major you have or are thinking about. All communities include students who are "undecided", as well. The majors that our office deals with regularly are: American Indian Studies, American Studies, Architecture, BIS/IDIM, Chicano Studies, Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature, English, Jewish Studies, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Studies in Cinema and Media Culture, Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies and Undeclared.

The staff here in Society and Culture is eager to serve you and consists of our Academic Advisers, Karen Crouch, Natan Paradise, Jayashree Kamble, and Chirayu Dongre; Administrative Specialist, Marlene Parkhurst; and Peer Advisers, Teresa Townsend and Thomas Taff.

If you have a quick question or two you may stop in and talk to an adviser on what we call a "walk-in appointment". Our office has walk-in advising hours this semester as follows:

Mondays: 9 - 12 and 1 - 4
Tuesdays: 9 - 12 and 1 - 4
Wednesdays: 10:30 - 12 and 1 - 4
Thursdays: 9 - 12 and 2 - 4
Fridays: 9 - 12 and 1 - 4

However, we strongly encourage all students to make regular advising appointments with us once a semester or more. Call our front desk at 612-624-2549 to make an appointment. You don't need a specific reason for the appointment, just checking in and seeing where you stand in terms of requirements is reason enough! We look forward to meeting with you. Don't forget to check out the rest of the website!
